Elisabeth Guerrier As a regular and very attentive foreign observer of the daily events in the USA, a few observations about some of the specific characteristics are coming to my mind bound to this recurrent and monstrous tragedy. I'm a great cinema lover and I watched yesterday " Three billboards " with Frances MCDormand. A few days before I watched a Swedish police series and the two examples being compared can give a rather good image of a major difference within the "gun fantasies"of each of these countries. There is almost no American movie without a huge level of violence as a rule, patent in gun shootings, blood, people dying in a few seconds, revenge and all this being depicted as obvious not to say NATURAL. In the Swedish police movie I referred to, and this may apply to many other ones, there was a crime as well, an investigation but not even a gun seen or a shot. I guess that the use of weapons to enhance the fiction is so rooted in the collective mind (as for the tobacco industry in the past it could be interesting to check the different links between Hollywood and the NRA) that it is almost impossible to imagine having a story told without them. If the USA have and keep this imaginary background as a way to define what is a regular social atmosphere, shall it be only fictional, the shootings may not only be a question of regulation, even if it also is, or of lobbies, even if it also is, but also and maybe more of some common expectations and shared myths on the symbolic power of guns and their links to law, manhood, citizenship and force.
